The American prison system is brutal. Harsh. Uncaring.

But it’s not only the isolation from their family and community that Jewish inmates have to deal with. The hardened criminals that they are kept with can be cruel, violent, and aggressive, and prison guards are often not successful at maintaining order and safety. Nutritious kosher food is limited, as are basic toiletries and other necessities.

Min Hameitzar is an organization that supports frum people in the prison system. They visit inmates as often as daily, and provide them with much needed warmth, compassion, and hope. The volunteers also bring them wholesome, kosher food, as well as toiletries and other basic essentials.

Min Hameitzar’s visits are important for another reason. Having consistent visitors helps protect the frum prisoners from abuse by the violent criminals in the ward. When the other prisoners see that these inmates have people who care about them and check in on them consistently, they get the message to stay away and not mess with them.

Min Hameitzar also provides rehabilitation services and guidance for these Yidden when they are released, helping them reintegrate into society successfully and rebuild their lives.
